You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can change depend on your device.
Check your device settings
Important: To get Gmail notifications, turn on device notifications.
- On your iPhone or iPad, go to your device's settings.
- Check your notification settings for Gmail.
Turn notifications on or off
If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, change this setting for each account.
By default, notifications are turned on for any email messages in your Primary label by default.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app

- At the top left, tap Menu

- Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications.
- Select a notification level.

- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app
- At the top left, tap Menu
- Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications
Turn notification sounds on or off
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app
- At the top left, tap Menu
- To change your notification, under "Notifications:"
- Email: Tap Email notifications
- Chat and Spaces: Tap Chat notifications
- When sounds are on, the name of the sound displays.
- Email: Tap Email notifications
- Choose the notification sound you want to use.
- Tap None to turn off sound.
